Hi everyone!
Happy Valentine’s Day a little early!
I flew in today from a two week Dancing with the Spirit music camp trip to Point Hope and Eagle–from one side of the state to the other! I’ve included a picture of our Dancing with the Spirit staff (myself, Mike Mickelson, Josephine Malemute, and Rion Schmidt) as we prepared to leave Point Hope with a truck load of instruments and gear. Plus there’s a picture of some of Point Hope’s delightful first graders!
There were polar bears walking around Point Hope–so we weren’t able to walk around ourselves! Sea ice conditions are poor–so the bears weren’t able to be out hunting seals–and came to town looking for food. We didn’t see any ourselves–but the neighbors in the house next to where Mike was staying saw one. And the pilots saw one as our plane took off.
Josephine and I continued on to Eagle–where in addition to having fun playing music with the kids–we got to see the Yukon Quest. There was quite a bit of frost bite among the mushers and the trail breakers on snow machines because of the cold (40 below and more) and windy conditions.
