Our rector is the Rev. Belle Mickelson. She “grew up” at St Geoge’s where she’s been a member for 33 years. She says that when she was installed as rector six years ago, she felt like she was “riding a tidal wave of love” because all her old friends who had raised their families at St. George’s—and her new friends, too—were so happy because it felt like their installation, too!
Prior to going to seminary, Belle was involved with the Alaska Sea Grant Program heading up a statewide school program called “Sea/River Week.” She then worked for the Cordova Schools first with a Commercial Fisheries Apprenticeship Program and later running an Alternative High School. With the help of parents and community members, she started the Cordova 4H Music Camp 23 years ago. It’s a summer highlight each July. Thousands of kids over the years now enjoy singing and playing music wherever they go… Two outgrowths of the music camp are an internationally touring band called Bearfoot www.bearfootband.com and over 100 Bluegrass Camps for Kids www.bluegrasscampsforkids.com
In the winter, besides her duties at St. George’s, Belle leads the Cordova 4H Wintertime Club. Together with the Cordova Schools—they sponsor Morning Music, a Guitar Instruction program for 5th and 6th graders, and a junior high/high school Music Club.
Belle is celebrating 10 years as a priest at St. George’s and 11 years as the leader of Dancing with the Spirit www.dancingwiththespirit.org whose goal is to spread music around the world bringing joy, love, and peace!
